Welcome to the new www.signcraft.com

Friday, July 17, 2009

Thanks for stopping by the new SignCraft.com--a valuable new resource for signmakers. We've spent the past few months revamping the site, and hope you find it helpful. Like our print magazine, we've packed the site with ideas and information to help make your work easier and more profitable.

This is just a starting point—we've got many new features and additions planned. Just as with SignCraft magazine, we're depending on your comments and suggestions to make the site even better. We hope you'll take a moment to send your ideas (or let us know if you happen upon features that don't work as they should!) We're looking forward to hearing from you at signcraft@signcraft.com.

Congratulations on the new and improved website.  I have been very proud to have been a small part if SignCraft and have our work and articles appear there through the years.  I hope to play a part here as well.  I'll be poking in from time to time and posting projects and comments and aswering questions as I am able.  Good luck with the new online SignCraft!

As with anything new-you probably have a few kinks in the system to work out-but the new format and layout look refreshing!
I'm also proud to be a small facet of what goes on in Signcraft!

    SIGNCRAFT ROCKS!

Do most shops charge a "RUSH" charge for short notice projects? If so, how much and for how many days? We have been charging this for a few years but have started to get a lot of resistance from customers over it. We just want to do what is acceptable in the industry.

Checked out your new .com.  Am I missing something here?  I tried the Gerber pic and got Frontier listing alot of unrelated junk.  I tried your Blog and then the catagories listed below.  What have they got to do with sign work?  I don't care to know about the biggest rock! I am confused.  Guess I will just stay with the "Good ole Magazine" instead of the modern approach.  You really shine with the mag - unbeatable, untouchable - my kind of info. Thanks any way.  Rose

Sorry for the confusion, Rose. We fixed the link problem and got rid of the stray “Category:” heading. The series of icons at the end of the blog (and one other pages throughout the site are for those who wish to link the page to their “social networking site”—such as Facebook, Digg It or Technorati.

Remember the new site (the “modern approach”) is not meant to be a replacement for your print edition of SignCraft (the “Good ole Magazine)! It’s another resource for our readers. Thanks for your comments and suggestions!

    Hiya  Tom,
Change is always  a little unnerving at first, but I see a site that is more interactive and that's a great plus. Thank you again for keeping it real and relevant just like the magazine.

Congratulations! This is a great addition to perfection....the "great ole magazine" hardcopy!

You guys were there, the very first day when I started my career in this industry in January 1986. I think we've BOTH grown well together.

THANKS! THANKS for being there all this time & thanks to the countless contributors, subscribers & advertisers.

    Faithfully, Brad "the Bandit" Bandow

I am just starting in this business and I would really like to know if there are any pictures or suggestions from the pros as to how to set up my workspace for the best flow?  Any tips or suggestions are welcome!  I am going to be doing mainly vinyl and digital signs/banners ect. At this point I am not doing the router signs.  I am also interested in T-shirt graphics.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    Lori Lowery

I'm an old school guy who is disgusted to see the world's second oldest profession turned over to bean counters and pagemakers. Let's think about this: old school is "green" compared to the amount of paper and vinyl waste being thrown into the environment by current sign production technologies.
Old school design is sign specific. What looks good on a computer display might sell a job to an ignorant customer looking for effective advertising, but these days, more often than not,  it doesn't do the job as effectively in the real world of competing images and messages.
Vehicle wraps piss me off more than anything, because it seems that everyone concentrates on attention being captured by backgrounds that range from the bizarre to the beautiful. The message and information seem to be secondary. I'm ashamed by some of the wraps being used these days by prosperous sign shops. You pass the vehicle in traffic and go "Whoa! What the hell was that?"
Guys like Raymond Chapman, Bob Behounek, and Mike Stevens understand the art of sign design better than the entirety of the current crop of computer trained kids, who can undoubtedly produce a trendy album cover or quarter page magazine ad better than an old school sign artist, but who fail miserably, for the most part, to produce anything enduring and valuable to their employers' customers in terms of signage.
End of rant. Who wants to help me find a way to keep the REAL sign trade alive?
