TIP OF THE WEEK

Magnetics on Vehicles

Many new vehicles have plastic doors. I always give my clients my handy magnetic business card and tell them to run outside and try it. About 25 percent of the time it won't stick! We sell them the applied vinyl. I also check for ribs, chrome, mirror mounts, gas caps, etc.

RECENT TIPS

Soften Up Your Squeegee

If you want to avoid scuff marks on your substrate that are caused from your squeegee, or simply want less friction, try lining the end of it with loop Velcro. It's great for wet applications, and it doesn't wear out or slide around like squeegee sleeves do.

Easy Paint Stirring

I drop a large bolt into each can of lettering enamel when I first open it. From then on, when I shake the paint, the bolt does the stirring for me. It really helps -- especially with metallics, where the metallic particles can settle to the bottom quickly.

Attaching a sign to a chain link fence

When I had to attach a Dibond sign [Alcan Composites, 800-438-1701, www.alcancompositesusa.com] to a chain link fence, I first thought of through-bolting it, using big washers on the back. Then I thought, "Why not use some of the leftover sign face stock?"

I drilled through both pieces, then used stainless nuts and bolts to fasten them together. (For photos of the project, see the "Tips & Tricks" in SignCraft, Nov/Dec 2005, Issue 145, page 12.)
