The best laid plans sometimes do not work out well when art and artists are involved. One group specializes in one type of art while another specializes in other disciplines. Either group may sometimes venture into the making of signs. When I saw what these artists had developed on this sheet of pegboard, I definitely had sympathy for their efforts.
Our beloved Island Conclave director realized how different signage can be from the world of fine art. She said they really needed a better look but that the conclave did not have a lot of extra cash to sink into this project. How many times have we heard that?
Like any art form, our world of signs is specialized. It involves more than the few brushstrokes we see in their current sign. As sign makers, most of us understand letterforms and have a general knowledge of how to layout a readable design.
Bob Behounek has spent over 40 years as a sign artist and pinstriper in the Chicago, Illinois, area.
