The magic year was 1969, a time filled with anticipation as I began my apprenticeship in the sign industry. Outside of pizza, hot dogs and the many other things for which Chicago had a reputation, I had no idea this region was also famous for what I was getting myself involved in: sign design.
Don’t get me wrong—I had spent years observing the creative signs I saw on cars, trucks and all the huge advertisements around town. Each had its own look and they captured my full attention. They seemed to speak to me in a silent human way, too.
Bob Behounek has spent over 40 years as a sign artist and pinstriper in the Chicago, Illinois, area.
