Growing up I would watch and sometimes help my father paint signs on days when he was off duty as a fireman. After graduating from college and having several uneventful years in retail, I took a renewed interest in signs and the styles of other sign painters. In 1974, I decided to pursue a career in the sign business. Forty-seven years later, I’m still here.

After a brief stint with my own small sign shop, I had the opportunity to go to work for a large sign company in Daytona Beach. There I trained under journeyman sign painters, one of whom had worked in New York City during the Depression. We painted commercial signs and billboards, laying them out by hand from scaled drawings.
