Moving beyond the flat sign

Flat signs are everywhere. High-end 3D signs and channel letters are out there, too. But in between is a level of dimension that few sign makers take advantage of: Adding a simple layer or two can ramp up the appeal of a sign. Raised off the background, the panel creates a shadow. There’s something about the shadow cast by the raised element that makes the sign more interesting.
At Tim Peterson’s Flat Earth Art Company, signs are certainly not always flat. Tim uses dimension on many of his signs to make them more interesting than the flat signs that surround them. One of the ways he does this while staying within the customer’s budget is using layers of cutouts.
