Doc Guthrie: A basic approach to sign layout

In his first class with each group of new students in the Sign Graphics program at Los Angeles Trade Tech College, Doc Guthrie always asked students what they wanted to learn how to do. They invariably said they wanted to make cool or creative or beautiful signs.

Doc would say, “Wrong answer! The first thing you want to create is a sign that works for the customer. That’s what you really want to do, and that’s what they are paying you to do. What good is a cool sign if people can’t read it?”
