Like a lot of high school students in the 1970s, Richard had the option of getting credits for “work experience.” Richard did that, so it wasn’t all that unusual—except that he was the only self-employed student in the program.
He had taught himself to letter and was busy building up a clientele for hand-lettered signs and paper signs. He was too busy to get a part-time job somewhere, so his “work experience” time was spent in the makeshift studio in a rented three-car garage.
