One of the factors that contribute to a sign failing to draw the reader’s eye is visual monotony. And since most signs are rectangular, one easy way to break that monotony is to cut the sign panel into a shape. Creative signmakers have long used the power of panel shapes to set their work apart from the rectangular signs that dominate the signscape.

RT Signs makes a habit of using an interesting sign shape to carry the message—especially on their freestanding signs and monuments. Along with his sons, Randy, Travis and Jason, Ralph Toews turns out a variety of commercial signs and vehicle graphics in their town of Steinbach in the central Canada province of Manitoba.
