One of the handiest tips I’ve come across over the years is to put an arrow on the lid of a new can of paint, with a marker, and a corresponding arrow on the side of the can. When you’re ready to put the lid back on, simply line them up. It always goes in the same place and fits, so the paint stays fresher without banging the lid with a hammer to get it to close and it avoids a thick dried skin on top.
