During spring break of his senior year of high school in 1975, Scott Bouma headed to Daytona Beach, Florida. As he watched the airbrush artists painting t-shirts, he decided that was what he wanted to do. A few months later he opened a t-shirt shop in a mall in his native Grandville, Michigan, which is just outside of Grand Rapids.

“By the early ’80s, I was pinstriping trucks,” says Scott, “and then people started asking me to letter their trucks. That was before computers, so there was a lot of production sign work. We had to knock it out and it was fun. Later I started doing some carved signs.
