75-by-40-ft. wall painted with Nova Color acrylic paints. Shawn Gilheeney, Providence Painted Signs, Providence, Rhode Island
Finished with 23K gold leaf and Matthews satin acrylic polyurethane paint. “We use the fact that we paint most of our signs with the Matthews Paint System as a selling point,” says Mike Szczoczarz, Countryside Signs, Seekonk, Massachusetts. “The durability, color retention and longevity means their sign will look better longer. It also lets us match virtually any color, which is a big plus.”

“We used Matthews Brilliant Gold Metallic with a gloss clearcoat on the lettering, ornament and border,” says Mike Szczoczarz. “It’s a great option when gold leaf isn’t in the budget. The background is satin black Matthews. The contrast of gloss against satin adds interest.”

Signage makes a lot of demands on paint products. We often need intense colors, one coat coverage and exceptional durability. We use a variety of substrates and materials. For backgrounds, we need paint that won’t chalk or fade over the life of the sign. For handlettered graphics, we need paint that works well in the brush.

While some coatings made for general residential and commercial painting purposes have a place in sign work, sign makers have a variety of paints and finishes to work with that are made specifically for sign production. These products are made with the specific needs of sign makers in mind and can make the sign maker’s life easier by delivering consistent, dependable results.
