Every day sign people have to deal with creating layouts for signs that have too much copy on them. Many customers have unrealistic ideas about how much text can and will be read by those who pass by their sign or see their vehicle.
One of the temptations is to compress the type to satisfy the customer’s request to “get it all on there as big as you can.” This distorts the typeface, causing the horizontal strokes to thicken as you see in this photo. The result is a sign that now not only has too much copy but is harder to read.
